Parramatta Police Headquarters

Crimson Lake

Parramatta Police Headquarters is named as the site of one police interview with Claire Bingley. The location matters chiefly through a detail in the interview record: Amanda Pharrell later noticed that Claire appeared to say “dog” while alone in a room with a recorder there, a clue that contributed to her renewed scrutiny of the case against Ted Conkaffey.

Recorded Interview

The reference to the headquarters occurs among Amanda’s notes on three occasions when Claire mentioned a white dog. Claire first mentioned one in a hospital interview, spoke of one again during an interview with a trauma counsellor, and, according to Amanda’s review of the tapes, mumbled “dog” once more during an interview at Parramatta Police Headquarters. Amanda believed that last mention came while Claire was alone in the room and the recorder was running. The evidence identifies the location of this particular interview, but does not establish that the other interviews took place there.

The Interview Record

The headquarters appears in a larger body of recorded material shaped by Claire’s severe distress. In the courtroom, Ted Conkaffey had been made to watch footage of Claire’s interviews: she rambled and whispered, struggled to focus on photographs, and at times broke down. The account also notes that Claire sometimes repeated words spoken by people around her; one clip of her repeating a counsellor’s question was played again and again by the prosecution. These details provide context for Amanda’s attention to an additional, easily overlooked word on the tapes, without resolving what Claire meant by it.

Significance to the Case

Amanda counted the repeated references to a white dog as sufficient reason to investigate further. Her notes connected Claire’s recorded words to a newspaper advertisement for a dog and to the former owners’ recollection of a dark blue ute belonging to the man who took it. In this way, Parramatta Police Headquarters enters the narrative not as a fully depicted setting but as a point in the evidentiary trail: a room, a recorder, and a disputed fragment that Amanda treats as worth pursuing. The location’s importance rests on the possibility that a detail in Claire’s recorded account might complicate the case against Ted.
